Mozambican designer and visual strategist, João Roxo is co-founder, creative director and visionary at Anima Creative Studio, a pioneering communication cohort commited to generating true impact in the sectors of social development, environmental conservation and the creative industries. Using design, filmmaking and new media, Anima sets itself apart through developing work that is context-specific, seeking to integrate these tools in unconventional and effective ways.

João studied in Portugal and the Netherlands, achieving his masters in fine arts degree at Sandberg Institute. During his studies, the practice of design has always had an integrative and holistic character, providing the perfect backbone for interacting with other distinct fields, allowing for interdisciplinarity and use of diversified media. Os Informais is a comic book universe originally idealized by João, where non-formal market workers become vigilantes that protect traditional values in a not-so-distant future. Thirdspace is a collaborative endeavor that aims to research speculative design expressions from the Global South, engaging with thinkers from multiple fields within the african continent. Muave is an audiovisual experience, where João works with video and light responding to electronic music.

Through his own artistic practice; designing for editorial, film or digital media; or his collaborative endeavors, João has participated in exhibitions, workshops and conferences in Maputo, Durban, Lisbon, Paris, Ramallah, Berlin, Havana, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Reunion, Lubumbashi, amongst other geographies.
